Student Support Services

Our Student Support Services team is committed to ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to succeed in a welcoming and inclusive environment. We provide second levelsupports through specialized expertise from TSEC consultants, offering targeted strategies and resources for both students and educators.

Through Jordan’s Principle, we connect students with Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) and Occupational Therapy (OT) services that address communication, physical, and developmental needs. In addition, we collaborate with Northern Voices Speech Services (NVSS) SLP providers to ensure consistent, high-quality speech and language support across our programs.

Our approach emphasizes inclusive education practices, where individual strengths are recognized, learning barriers are addressed, and all students can participate fully in classroom and school life. By working closely with teachers, families, and community partners, we create a network of support that empowers every student to reach their full potential.

Speech & Language

Speech and Language support at Senator Allan Bird Memorial School is designed to help students build strong communication skills. Through pre-screening, post-assessments, and individualized support plans, students receive guidance tailored to their needs. The program includes professional development for staff and collaboration with families to ensure consistent progress in speech and language growth.

Services are delivered in partnership with NVSS/Treaty Six Education Council specialists, including Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) and Occupational Therapists (OT), to provide comprehensive support. These efforts create a strong foundation in literacy, social interaction, and academic learning for every student.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy at SABMS focuses on helping students develop the skills they need for daily success in the classroom and beyond. Support is provided through individual and small group sessions, with strategies adapted to meet each learner’s unique needs.

The program is delivered in collaboration with Treaty Six Education Council specialists and Jordan’s Principle services, ensuring students receive consistent therapy, assessments, and follow-ups. This holistic approach supports physical, sensory, and academic development.

Krista Cochrane

Krista Cochrane, M.Ed., is a Registered Psychologist contracted by SABMS. She provides in-person psychoeducational assessments for students of all ages. These comprehensive evaluations are based on a variety of sources, including academic records, standardized tests, direct observations, and feedback from parents, teachers, and other relevant specialists. The findings are summarized in a report that helps parents and teachers understand a student’s strengths and areas where they need help. In some cases, the assessment may lead to a formal diagnosis, such as a Learning Disability, Intellectual Disability, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Jill Frith

My name is Jill Frith. I am a speech language pathologist (SLP). I provide in person speech therapy at Senator Allan Bird Memorial School. My job is to help children with talking, listening, and understanding words. I help students speak clearly when they are hard to understand or stutter. I also help with reading and writing. It’s my role to support students with different needs to find their voice through technology and adaptation. I work with teachers, educational assistants, and parents to help each student do their best in class and make learning easier.

Northern Voices Speech Services – SABMS

Northern Voices Speech Services (NVSS) is paving a new way for speech therapy in Saskatchewan. At SABMS, we are working closely with the school team to create a sustainable, community-run speech program that ensures students receive the consistent and intensive support they need—directly within their learning environment.

Our framework begins with in-person speech and hearing assessments. Students are evaluated using culturally safe tools that account for linguistic differences, and individualized therapy plans are created for those requiring intervention. Educational assistants and school staff receive hands-on training and ongoing mentorship, enabling them to deliver daily therapy tailored to each student’s needs.

Rather than relying on short-term visits or virtual-only models, we prioritize building capacity within each community. School teams take on active roles in running their own speech centers, promoting inclusion, early intervention, and long-term student success.

To support at-home practice, all families at SABMS receive free access to our NVSS TeachSpeech App—a digital resource featuring cutting-edge 3D training videos, speech games, and printable activities/ resources.

Our innovative model has garnered national attention for its impact and sustainability, and was selected to be showcased at the Waves: Global Indigenous Languages Summit. By combining best practices in speech therapy with culturally-responsive tools and technology, NVSS is proud to support Indigenous communities in reclaiming language, supporting students, and building stronger, more empowered schools.

Dean Davidson

Support students with everyday life situations at school and at home if need be. Areas to focus on are the supports in their academics, personal, and future goals. I feel it’s also a goal to have support systems spiritually, mentally, and physically. Each student/client is a case-by-case, therefore each will need a different kind of counselling that best suits them.

Academic guidance helps students in choosing the right courses that best fit their study skills and address educational challenges. Career focus is on future goals and plans after high school, resume creation, and job search criteria. Personal explores and helps address social issues, conflicts, and provides mental health resources and solutions. We also work with the faculty to best suit everyone’s schedules for staff, parents, and the SS team. We also do referrals for the most appropriate services and advocate for the well-being of students.

Our class also puts on programs for the students, such as Lunch and Learn, and boys’ and girls’ programs. These programs can be anything from learning how to sew, to knowing your human rights, to learning the do’s and don’ts of everyday life in the real world. We provide meals, from snacks to full meals.

Our room has a private room for one-on-one sessions, couches to relax, and a smart TV to use for learning tools for the students. We play games—board games, that is—and we have done very well to keep our room a no-cell-phone room, and most of the youth respect that rule.
